Abstract

Assessing household-level food consumption is often hindered by time constraints and respondent availability, making face-to-face methods less effective. This study aims to analyze 24-hour food consumption at the household level and provide an overview of household consumption patterns using a remote method known as the food telephone. This study utilized a digital food model photo book sent via WhatsApp. The research method employed was quantitative descriptive, conducted through a survey of a family of five in Percut Sei Tuan Subdistrict, Deli Serdang. Data collection was carried out through three main stages: a pre-survey, telephone interviews, and data verification. The results indicate an imbalance in dietary patterns within the family. R1 (father), R2 (mother), and R3 (eldest child) had insufficient fat intake, ranging from deficient to inadequate, due to skipping breakfast and consuming only low-fat animal-based side dishes (tuna) without plant-based accompaniments. Conversely, the protein and carbohydrate intake of some respondents fell into the excessive category due to large portions of staple foods. The main limitations of this study is instability of networks and respondent recall bias regarding the timing of meals. In addition, the food model photo book has proven effective in improving the accuracy of portion in grams.
